TFI co-organized a grand iftar event dubbed “Friends Beyond Faith” at Mindanao State University – General Santos City on April 19, 2023. The event aimed to promote tolerance and intercultural understanding by highlighting positive relationships between people of different faiths. Approximately 400 students attended the event.
One of the highlights of the program was the #FastingChallenge, which encouraged non-Muslims to experience the journey of Muslims during Ramadan by fasting. The Iftar meal, which is the evening meal that Muslims eat to break their daily fast, was also an integral part of the event. The Iftar meal usually begins with dates and water, following the practice of Prophet Muhammad, and is followed by a full meal consisting of a variety of dishes based on cultural traditions.
During Iftar, Muslims take time for gratitude, reflection, and connecting with family and friends. It is also a time for charity and giving to those in need.
The event was initiated by MSU General Santos City’s Center for Women Studies (CWS), Cultural Affairs Office (CAO), Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao (IPDM), Association of Mindanao State University Alumni (AMSUA), Faculty Union, Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI), and the Fundamentals of Peace Education teachers.
Overall, the event aimed to spread the message of love, respect, and acceptance among people of different faiths, and the #FastingChallenge encouraged participants to have a better understanding and appreciation of Muslim culture and traditions.
