TFI visits 3 Urban Centers for Research on Solid Waste Management Practices

In an effort to address pressing environmental concerns and promote sustainable waste management practices, Transforming Fragilities, Inc (TFI) visits three (3) identified urban centers for a comprehensive Survey Data Collection for Research on Solid Waste Management in Cotabato City. This data collection is a part of TFI’s larger project on Integrated Solid Waste Management and Circular Economy Adaptation.

The survey activities have been strategically launched in three identified urban areas: General Santos City, Kidapawan City, and Surallah.

To achieve its objectives, TFI is employing a multifaceted approach. This includes conducting in-depth Focused Group Discussions (FGDs) and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) with key stakeholders, including officials from the City and Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Offices, as well as the Waste Management Office. Furthermore, the project team will undertake site visits to various facilities such as Sanitary Landfills, Medical Waste Facilities, Composting Facilities, Recycling Facilities, Biomass, and Biotech Plants to observe firsthand the waste management processes in action.

The primary goals of the survey are threefold. First, TFI seeks to glean insights into the best practices and strategies employed by role model cities in waste management. Second, it aims to understand how these cities effectively manage and sustain their solid waste systems, with the intention of replicating successful strategies in Cotabato City. Finally, the project aims to provide firsthand experiences of the different waste management facilities and activities in the role model cities, particularly focusing on the conversion of waste into eco-products.

The survey activities are scheduled as follows: Kidapawan from February 28-29, Surallah from March 1-2, and General Santos from March 4-5.

Several respondents have provided valuable insights into their waste management practices. One respondent emphasized, “Here in our area, we strongly implement no segregation, no collection,” underlining the importance of waste segregation. Another noted, “Despite our limited resources, we ensure cleanliness in our municipality,” highlighting the commitment to environmental stewardship despite challenges. Additionally, another respondent emphasized the importance of enforcing ordinances without discrimination, ensuring compliance with waste management regulations.

Transforming Fragilities, Inc’s survey represents a significant step towards enhancing solid waste management practices in Cotabato City. The project is funded by the European Union and in partnership with the Word Vision Development Foundation, Inc and the City Environment and Natural Resources.
